England Advances to Euro 2025 Women’s Quarterfinals After Defeating Wales 6-1

The England women’s national team secured a place in the Euro 2025 quarter-finals after a dominant 6–1 victory over Wales at Kybunpark Stadium in St. Gallen, Switzerland, on Saturday (July 12, 2025). The result marks a strong comeback for Sarina Wiegman’s squad, following their opening loss in Group D.

Stanway opens the scoring as England dominate early

England came out aggressively from the start. Georgia Stanway opened the scoring with a penalty in the 13th minute, followed by goals from Ella Toone, Lauren Hemp, and Alessia Russo in the first half. Beth Mead and Aggie Beever-Jones added two more in the second half.

Wales managed a consolation goal through Hannah Cain, which wasn’t enough to prevent a heavy defeat in their final group-stage match.

Group D recap: England finish second, France top the table

After a 1–2 loss to France in their opening match, the Lionesses bounced back with two convincing wins: 4–0 over the Netherlands and 6–1 against Wales. However, the top spot in Group D was claimed by France, who staged a dramatic 5–2 comeback win against the Netherlands, with Delphine Cascarino netting two crucial goals.

Quarter-finals: England to face Sweden in Zurich

As Group D runners-up, England will now face Group C winners Sweden in the quarter-finals to be held in Zurich. Despite not topping the group, England are seen to have landed on a potentially more favorable path in the knockout stage, avoiding several top contenders early on.

Wales earn praise despite early exit

Although eliminated, Wales received praise for their performance in what was their first major tournament appearance. Their passionate supporters helped create a positive atmosphere throughout the competition, even if the team fell short on the pitch.
