Malaysian Super League changes foreign player rules for next season

The Malaysian Football League (MFL) has announced significant changes to foreign player regulations for the Malaysian Super League 2025-2026 season — this decision was made during the 14th board of directors meeting for the 2021-2025 period.

The new format introduces a quota change to 6+3 substitutes — consisting of 4 open players, 1 Asian player, and 1 ASEAN player. This system replaces the old 7+2 format that previously accommodated 2 ASEAN player slots.

“MFL believes that foreign players’ presence can enhance Super League quality and appeal, but local player development remains our main focus to strengthen the national team, Harimau Malaya,” explained MFL.

“Most clubs believe that ASEAN players’ presence doesn’t significantly impact team performance, making it rational to reduce one ASEAN quota,” added MFL.

This change aims to create balance in core player composition — providing greater opportunities for local players to develop within the competition.
