Lyon Successfully Appeals Relegation to Ligue 2

Olympique Lyon has successfully overturned their relegation to Ligue 2 after appealing to the French football federation. According to Reuters, the club convinced DNCG with their new financial plan.

Lyon’s main issues — a €541 million debt and an inflated wage bill without adequate cash flow. To maintain their Ligue 1 status, the club must provide a €100 million cash injection and an additional €100 million guarantee for the next two years.

Leadership changes have also occurred at the club — John Textor stepped down from the board and president position, replaced by Michele Kang, a shareholder in Eagle Football Group.

This decision impacts Crystal Palace’s hopes of playing in the Europa League. Palace must convince UEFA they have a separate ownership structure from Lyon, given Eagle Football Group’s involvement in both clubs.

“UEFA’s decision regarding Crystal Palace’s eligibility to compete in Europe is expected to be announced in the coming days,” revealed an ESPN source.
