Canada incident strengthens championship battle between McLaren drivers

According to Sky Sports, McLaren CEO Zak Brown states that the collision between Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri at the Canadian GP has actually had a positive impact on the team — the incident helped release the tension building between both drivers.

After the Montreal incident, Norris bounced back perfectly — the British driver won the Austrian GP from pole position and claimed an emotional victory at the British GP. Though his Silverstone win was aided by Piastri’s 10-second penalty, McLaren’s performance remained dominant throughout the race.

“I think Montreal was actually a nice moment for all of us. It just took the air out of the balloon and we got it over with, and everyone was talking about it,” said Brown.

With only eight points separating Piastri and Norris in the title fight, McLaren remains committed to letting both drivers race freely. The team also confirmed they will run an upgraded floor on both cars at the upcoming Belgian GP.

“We just keep doing what we’re doing. Treat them equally, fairly, transparently. If we can continue to build a gap, then we want it to be up to them to decide who wins the championship,” added Brown.
