44-year-old Fluminense veteran sets record in Club World Cup

The opening match of Group F in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup between Fluminense and Borussia Dortmund — held at MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford — ended in a goalless draw.

Fabio Lopes, Fluminense’s goalkeeper, made history as the oldest player ever to appear in this tournament — at the age of 44 years and 259 days.

Fabio’s career journey is truly remarkable — his professional debut began in 1997 with a total of 1,357 competitive matches. Interestingly, 20 of Dortmund’s 31 squad members weren’t even born when Fabio started his career.

  • Professional debut in 1997
  • U-17 World Cup winner in 1997 with Ronaldinho
  • 28 years of professional career
  • 1,357 competitive appearances

Besides Fabio, Fluminense also features another veteran — Thiago Silva who continues to demonstrate his best abilities at a mature age.
