Abbondanza Discusses His Korean Career After Joining Fenerbahçe

Marcello Abbondanza reflects on Korean volleyball journey

According to OA Sports, Marcello Abbondanza, the former head coach of Incheon Heungkuk Life Pink Spiders, opened up about his coaching journey in South Korea in a recent interview.

Championship success before moving to Turkey

The Italian tactician made history by guiding the Pink Spiders to the Korean Volleyball League title during the 2024–2025 season. Shortly after the achievement, he accepted a new challenge — joining Fenerbahçe in the Turkish League.

Kim Yeon-koung played a pivotal role

Abbondanza’s stint in Korea was closely connected to Kim Yeon-koung, his former player at Fenerbahce, who returned to Korea to conclude her illustrious career. Their reunion proved fruitful as they once again created volleyball history.

Three seasons, two near-misses, and one crowning moment

In what marked his first coaching experience in Asia, Abbondanza led the Pink Spiders through three remarkable seasons. After back-to-back runner-up finishes in the 2022–2023 and 2023–2024 seasons, he finally delivered the title in dramatic fashion.

Epic finale against Red Sparks

The championship-deciding series saw the Pink Spiders overcome Daejeon JungKwanJang Red Sparks in a gripping five-leg showdown — a fitting finale to Abbondanza’s impactful Korean journey.
